NORCROSS, Ga. – SALTO Systems has announced the appointment of three new area leaders for the West, Southeast, and Northeast regions of North America. The move comes as part of the organization’s decentralization initiative to enhance customer service, foster a culture of learning, and ensure sustainable growth. “I’m proud that our team and organization has grown and achieved the ability to begin to realize this decentralized vision. Many within our team have been working hard behind the scenes to arrive at this moment,” says SALTO North America President Bill Wood. “Decentralizing our organization allows us to get closer to our customers and better understand their needs. By moving decision-making closer to the customer, we can respond more quickly to their needs, improve our service offerings, and ensure that we are meeting their expectations. “We believe this approach will lead to a more customer-centric organization, resulting in greater customer satisfaction and loyalty, and will help us attract and retain top talent, enhance our organizational capabilities, and drive innovation,” Wood continues. Joe Buist has been named area leader for SALTO West. Buist, who has been in the security industry for nearly two decades, has worked for SALTO for 11 years in a variety of technology and sales roles and most recently served as senior regional sales manager for the West. Steve Burk is the area leader for SALTO Southeast. Burk most recently served SALTO as director of marketing and industries. Before joining SALTO four years ago, his career included marketing and sales leadership with Delta Material Services, Avaya, Inc., and IBM Corporation. His specialties include leading direct and channel marketing, strategic planning, operational effectiveness, channel sales, and key vendor relations. “Having successfully directed multi-faceted assignments and assumed key roles in the development of high-visibility, high-impact projects, I look forward to leading the Southeast area team and working with David and Joe. Together, with our customer-first philosophy, we will deliver unparalleled customer value,” says Burk. David Latreille is the area leader for SALTO Northeast. He most recently served SALTO as international program manager, delivering complex programs to SALTO’s largest clients around the world. An end user advocate and disciplined agile evangelist, he says he looks forward to sharing the experiences of the last five years at SALTO with his team and their customers. “As a people-over-process leader, I’m honored to be given the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of individuals here at SALTO. We recognize that every single employee’s contribution is essential to our success, and I look forward to playing my part in our evolution,” says Latreille. “We’re thrilled to welcome Joe, Steve, and David to their new roles. With their extensive industry knowledge, experience, and leadership, they will be instrumental in driving SALTO ‘s decentralized approach, delivering unparalleled customer value, and ensuring sustainable growth,” says Wood.

Checkpoint Systems, the New Jersey-based provider of RFID and RF technology solutions, has acquired Denmark-based Alert Systems, an Internet of Things (IoT) specialist with a focus on metal and magnet detection in the retail environment. Alert Systems has, since 1999, supplied the retail industry with solutions to identify tools and techniques used by criminals to steal items from stores, such as boosterbags (handmade containers lined with foil used to shoplift) and detachers (illegal magnets used to detach tags with ease), commonly detected at store entrance/exits and fitting room areas. For a number of years, Checkpoint has been a partner and major distributor for Alert Systems, providing metal and magnet detection products, including Hyperguard, Metalguard and Apparelguard – a batch of digital software-driven solutions that serve to work against shoplifters using boosterbags and detachers. “Organized retail crime (ORC) is increasing globally; in the U.S. alone, retailers saw a 26.5% increase in incidents in 2021and shrinkage represented nearly $100 billion in losses in 2022,” says Ben Lilienthal, president of Checkpoint Worldwide. “This is due to criminals using increasingly advanced methods of avoiding detection, some of which can defeat traditional EAS anti-theft solutions. These include foil-lined containers or booster bags which shield the security tag from the EAS system thus allowing stolen items to leave a store without triggering an alarm. By providing retailers with more information regarding when and where organized retail crime threats are entering a store, our new solutions will help retailers drive down the ever-increasing prevalence of gang-related crime. “Checkpoint has long been known for its expertise in the retail security space and we are looking forward to providing our retail customers around the world with an even stronger loss prevention offering that will cater to their every retail security need,” he continues. Checkpoint Systems’ acquisition of Alert Systems “is the logical next step in our shared mission to tackle retail crime,” says Troels Falkenberg, CEO Alert Systems. “With this industry scourge on the rise, it is important that retailers have access to a solid portfolio of solutions to help them effectively manage the issue, and we know Checkpoint Systems is the right organization to facilitate this. The company has a well-known, long-standing reputation in the loss prevention field and we are delighted to extend our previous partnership into a full acquisition.” Checkpoint Systems is a global supplier of RF and RFID hardware, software, labels, tags and connected solutions. The company is a brand of Toronto, Ontario-based CCL Industries, which also includes CCL, Avery, and Innovia.

SaaS has changed the way organizations think about their day-to-day operations, and has had a transformational impact on IT. Physical security, however, has yet to fully take advantage of SaaS solutions. Here are a few key reasons why SaaS has seen broad adoption across the enterprise:
Over the years, IT has realized outsized gains from adopting SaaS. Many recurring tasks that were once performed manually, like onboarding and offboarding employees, are now automated using low-code or no-code SaaS-based tools. IT has embraced SaaS, enabling other departments to manage and secure applications and the data within them. Through a Physical Security PrismSaaS-based solutions can also dramatically ease the management of physical security devices, lower costs, and improve cybersecurity for physical security departments. Let’s examine the universal benefits again, but this time, through the lens of a physical security team.
A Key Phase in the EvolutionSo why hasn’t physical security truly embraced SaaS? I don’t think there is a single answer. One theory is a historical disconnect with IT, which fully embraced SaaS years ago. Over time, limited collaboration meant less information sharing, and this may have created knowledge gaps. For many in physical security, their experience with SaaS is largely with video surveillance as a service (VSaaS), which presents its own challenges (such as bandwidth and networking considerations), and still hasn’t been widely adopted. Physical security was historically a leader in adopting technology, with expertise in devices. Originally, it worked mostly with analog devices, and with the migration to digital cameras and IP-based networks, physical security has been making up ground in device and operations management. Moving from legacy software and manual methods to SaaS-based solutions is a key phase in this evolution. Roy Dagan is CEO of SecuriThings. The post SaaS: Time for Physical Security to Get Onboard appeared first on Security Sales & Integration. from News Archives - Security Sales & Integration https://www.securitysales.com/business/saas-time-for-physical-security-to-get-onboard/ via IFTTT Via https://westoninspace.blogspot.com/2023/04/saas-time-for-physical-security-to-get.html Attending ISC West during the period in which SSI’s annual AI Issue was produced could not have been more timely as the loudest buzz (cynics might say hype) around what appeared to be this show’s most robust turnout ever was unquestionably artificial intelligence. This makes sense as AI is going to transform the way modern society lives, works and conducts business across industries. Electronic security — with its access control, video surveillance and other systems’ capacity to aggregate large datasets and its mission to safeguard people and assets — is near the top of that list. AI holds the key to realizing dreams like the elimination of false alarms, real-time response, and even predicting and preventing incidents. The prospects are astounding and game changing. No wonder on the ISC West expo floor, to varying degrees, most of the largest and familiar vendors, and especially newer entrants, promoted either AI-centric products or the incorporation of the technology into their products — often in concert with specialized partners. And while the advertised and, in some cases, demonstrated capabilities of many of these solutions are impressive, the rollout and application of AI-heavy security solutions is in its infancy. In fact, many are still trying to get a handle on what constitutes AI. According to IBM, artificial intelligence combines computer science and robust datasets to enable problem-solving. It also encompasses subfields of machine learning and deep learning, which are frequently mentioned in conjunction with AI. While the possibilities are fascinating and exciting (some would say scary), we are on the precipice of a bold new world that demands proceeding with great care, diligence, and mindfulness. As our industry advances AI’s real-world security capabilities and fleshes out its use cases, we must endeavor to avoid the premature and overhyped missteps of technologies like video analytics and biometrics (now both greatly improved and viable) following 9-11. Deep and ongoing communication and education with the general public and legislators is essential, lest we find ourselves in the kind of quagmire that has beset the widespread adoption and deployment of a powerful technology like facial recognition. “With AI, you don’t need to know anything about that individual, their identity, their demographic characteristics, all this stuff that is incorporated into facial recognition,” Phillipe Sawaya, co-founder of AI startup Percepta, told me. That business was acquired by ADT Commercial, where Sawaya was recently named the company’s first-ever director of artificial intelligence. “You don’t need to know any of that to determine what’s happening. Their current behavior, what’s going on around them, that’s all that should be needed to make informed analytic decisions. Frankly, the backlash against facial is a good indicator for the industry that our customers are rightfully critical and paying close attention to if we need that level of invasiveness to accomplish the end goal.” Coming out of the gate with a baseline of reasonable perceptions and expectations, compelling applications, and well informed and trained providers are keys to successful acceptance, adoption, and advancement. The overriding factor is ensuring the use of AI serves not only in the best interests of clients but the public good at large. “We’ve pursued ethical AI since the start for just basic human ethical reasons. As AI becomes more commonplace and more capable, there are going to be a lot more reasons for companies to share our concern for ethical AI, be it the development of regulation or limitations on where and how AI can be used. More and more, ethical AI is going to become not so much an ethical aspirational goal, but really a practical must for the development of AI solutions,” Sawaya adds. “What that means on the technology side is there’s going to be a lot more standardization of what it means to be ethical. Every analytics company on the planet today probably says, ‘Unbiased or privacy-preserving,’ or something like that on their website. But I’d wager every company has a different definition of what that means. As that definition becomes standardized, there’ll be a lot of catch-up in the methods and tools to measure bias and to what degree something preserves privacy, and how the AI models run themselves.”
